***Update***
Within a couple days of posting this review the seller reached out to me to get the problem resolved. They ended up sending out a new cup at no additional cost. The new cup works like a charm. The chicks all drink out of it with no training needed. They’re outside during the day now. It seems to be holding up well in the Florida heat. They did get some shavings in the cup when they were still in the brooder but now that they’re outside the cup has been staying clean. Changing my rating to 5 stars and I’m very pleased with this purchase. Likely going to be getting a bigger version for the adult flock.
I got this product for some new baby chicks. They’re still in a cardboard box because they’re so little. They will be transferred to a larger cage soon. They took to drinking out of it right away, which was great. There was no learning curve of trying to peck at a dispenser to release water. I was able to suspend the drinker on the side of the box using the clips provided. The problem is that the water leaks out of the bottom where the spring is located. It seems the product is designed for the weight of the water in the cup to trigger the spring to seal the valve. As the birds drink up the water, the weight shift in the cup will allow the water to be slowly released. When it’s first filled up, it reacts correctly. But as the chicks start drinking and the valve opens up, the water drips all the way out thru the spring, into the box, onto the floor, emptying the container. So now every 30 mins or so I fill the little cup back up and they clammer to get a drink, which defeats the purpose of getting it. It is extremely easy to clean and does avoid getting shavings and debris in the watering cup. I fear this is more of a design issue than a one-off faulty product.

terrific for messy little duckling, which are waisting so much water

I have pet pigeons and keeping their water clean is really hard, especially because pigeons have dander like parrots and so most water dishes end up full of poop and dander within a day, but not this! The cup is small enough that it doesn’t attract too much dander and is hard for them to land a poop in, and they love that the water is always clean. I love how easy it is to refill and I don’t have to clean and refill it every day like the previous dishes. I’m the DIY type who is always making things, and I’ve tried making an auto-waterer for my birds many times, but this product is simply better in every way. Sturdy and easy to attach, doesn’t leak or move (even if they try to bathe in the cups) and they can use it really easily. My reccomentation if your birds aren’t quite understanding that it’s a water bowl is to gently dip their beak in the water so they realize that it is full.
Overall, I love it and am ordering a bigger version for my main coop, and will use this one on their transport crate.

I really like the design and concept of this waterer, it makes keeping clean water for the chicks so much easier. It’s easy to install and easy to fill but it leaks like a sieve. No matter what I do or how I place it I have to refill it every 4 hours and there’s a nice muddy spot right below it.

Update: (1/10/21) Here I am nearly a year after buying these, and absolutely everything I wrote below is still 100% true! This is still the best product I’ve ever bought for my guinea pigs… they do everything they claim to and more! I couldn’t be happier with them! No problems what-so-ever!
Update: (6/1/20) My guinea pigs have been using these waterers for 4 months and they still love them! They don’t chew them or spill them at all, and the waterers are holding up wonderfully in all areas of concern; No problems at all! This is by far the BEST product I’ve ever bought for my guinea pigs! Plus I still feel that my guinea pigs actually drink more from these vs. the old water bottles and there’s absolutely no dripping/spillage or noise when they drink, (which could be a bother for some people as some guinea pigs can be rather active during night/pre-dawn hours.) Would I buy again? Yes, 100%! I’ve told everyone I know with small animals to buy these waterers too!
*Updated Tip: Anyone who has guinea pigs knows that they’re messy little creatures, so they will inevitably get things like hay/poop/treats inside these water cups, (because they’re open like bowls.) However, I keep mine located in a corner to minimize this and I use a large, plastic turkey baster (with a large opening at the end) to suck all of the water & debris out of the cups, (it makes this task incredibly fast & easy!) It’s also an excellent way to completely empty the dispenser of water should you want to clean the cups/dispenser. I use the baster to remove debris daily, (it just takes a few seconds,) the entire waterer is made of food-grade plastic too which means I’ve never found the cup/dispenser to have any on it either.
Initial Review: I bought and quickly received (2) RentaCoop 1 liter auto-fill small animal waterers (on 2/1/2020) and they are already working out wonderfully for my 3 guinea pigs! They came with simple yet detailed instructions which made setting them up and securing them to the cage incredibly easy.
Note: These waterers are sold with and without the automatically-filled “cups” that attach to the nipple and are designed to go inside the cage. So be absolutely sure that you are buying the product that comes with the cups if you are buying them for small animals, (mice/hamster/guineas pigs/etc.,) as I’m not sure a small animal would be able to easily drink from them without the cups.
Tip: Before the first use you have to take the top completely off to get the metal holders/cups/instructions out of the inside of the waterer, (I couldn’t get these things out without first taking the top off.) When you go to replace the top it’s going to be hard to snap it back in place, I found the easiest way was to slide the plastic edge into the front or back lip of the top and press hard. Do this on a flat surface, BEFORE you install the waterer onto the cage! It makes putting the top back on a lot easier! Once you’ve done this, however, the rest of the setup is a breeze as long as you install the nut in the correct spot, (more about that below.)
I bought these waterers to solve a couple of problems I kept having; Water bottles leaking, taking up too much space inside the cage, not being able to be easily cleaned, not being able to easily refill, and having to attach/reattach the traditional bottles with flimsy metal wire or twist ties, etc. every time I needed to refill/clean. Ugh… This new water dispenser however has solved every one of those problems so far!
The water dispenser itself is designed to stay on the outside of the cage leaving only the self-filling cup on the inside of the cage for your pet to drink from. This saved a LOT of room on the inside of my cage as I used to have to keep water troughs under my old water bottles because they leaked so badly, (and even with the water troughs there still wasn’t a 100% guarantee that the old water bottles wouldn’t get moved while being used by a guinea pig and leak every last ounce out into the cage.)
These water dispensers were also easily attached to my cage, even with the full weight of the water it stayed in place very well. At first I used only the metal wire to hold them up, but I ended up installing the metal spring around the bottom of them too just for good measure. With both of these in place, the water dispenser doesn’t move at all and I no longer have to fool with trying to reattach the waterer on the side of my cage with clamps, twist ties, etc. This makes refilling/cleaning SO much easier!
The two holders do not squeeze the water dispenser either (as they usually do with traditional water bottles) as the plastic on this dispenser is much thicker and holds its square shape even when you install the holders tightly around it. Because of the thicker plastic, the dispenser isn’t squeezed which makes water come out of the end of the traditional water bottles; another problem I had with my old water bottles. I read reviews on this product before I bought it that said this happened to them, but mine does not do this at all.
I also read some reviews that said that their cups leaked water, but my cups aren’t leaking at all. I poured the water in and watched the cup fold down with the weight as the water filled it up and the waterline hasn’t moved at all. I would encourage these reviewers to make absolutely sure that they installed the cups onto the waterer correctly by screwing them into the water dispenser with the plastic gasket on the outside (cup side) and the plastic nut on the inside, (inside the water dispenser.)
For those of you buying these for hamsters/mice/guinea pigs; this holds as much water as the largest traditional waterer you can buy (30oz.) and all three of my pigs went right for the new waterers and drank from them! I was really worried about this, but they were all curious about the new water cups and took to them very easily! I have one guinea who I hardly ever see drinking, but I saw him visit the cup to drink over and over in just the first 30 minutes or so; he really likes it! I put small marks at the water line with a dry erase marker to be sure they drank from them over night, and they have! That’s a big one, make SURE your animal IS drinking as they might need more time and you don’t want them to dehydrate or die while getting used to the new drinking cups! I’d also like to note that my piggys haven’t chewed on the plastic cups or caused the water to spill out either; even in my rowdiest piggys cage (all boys!) I put absorbent pads under the cups, and they are still dry 18 hours later, so I’m very optimistic about these waterers, (and I’ve tried many different waterers in the past that just haven’t worked out… waterers that they hardly ever touched!)
Bottom line: These waterers have saved me a LOT of time and hassle and solved every single problem I had with my old water bottles, plus I feel that they have already started allowing my guinea pigs drink more water in a more natural way. Your included card mentioned that you spent 2 years designing and testing this product, and it really shows! I didn’t want to buy the same old waterer that relied on the same old idea that just didn’t deliver on its promises, and you ensured that I didn’t have to! Way to go!
I would also like to note that I was NOT paid to give my honest review; I believe that you should give credit where it is due, especially in today’s economy where it is rare to find products that aren’t insanely expensive but still do what they claim to.
*Bonus: A card comes with this product that introduces you to the Rent a Coop family, shows you where to find video instructions, and gives you all of their customer service contact information should you have comments or questions or receive a defective product PLUS* you get a free, 2 year extended warranty! (AND they don’t ask you leave a 5-star review to get it like some companies do!)
-My guinea pigs thank you, RentaCoop! Thank you for such an inventive, quality product; We will definitely buy from you again!

It over filled and dripped until water level fell beneath the opening of flow from tank. Now have a small marble in it to stop it over filling. Strong quality plastic but slides down the cage if filled

Great automatic waterer. Just fill up and walk away.

Attractive looking and easy to use. TIP: this unit requires regular cleaning. To ensure ease of cleaning add a tiny bit of apple cider vinegar to the water. Your birds will benefit from the natural biorganisms in the vinegar and the acidity will prevent alge.

I first got this for my conures because it seemed like such a great concept. I could refill their water from outside the cage?! Genius! At first they were afraid, they were petrified. They stayed on the other side of the cage and squawked at it for the good half of the afternoon. Then they started to attack it and chewed the little red cup. It appears that they would rather die of dehydration before using it for its intended purpose. So I took it out of their cage and put it outside for my chickens. Well, they’re too stupid to figure out what it even is so it’s a nice backyard ornament I suppose. I’m rating it 4 stars because even though it didn’t work out for me, the product is actually great, and maybe other people have normal, mentally stable animals.
