I’m a new owner of four adult hens. I’ve never had chickens before and it seemed that their eggshells were easily broken compared to store-bought eggs. Also, being a new chicken parent, I wanted some treats to get the ladies to like me! After doing some research, I bought these treats to serve multiple purposes – protein for health, calcium for shell strength, and tastiness for getting the girls to be comfortable with me.
The first time I fed the chickens the Grubblies, they pecked a little at them but mostly ignored them. I guess they’d never had these treats before. But by the next day, the Grubblies were gone. I hoped that the chickens ate them instead of some other creature.
However, after that first time, the girls have developed a good taste for these treats. They come running now and gobble them up in minutes!
I’m not sure yet whether they will help with egg shell strength yet but I’m happy with these so far because they make my chickens happy!

My chickens love this! The mornings we do not give them this treat they get upset with us. When we give them this they cluck with excitement.

We were looking to an alternative to the imported dried meal worms for our backyard wild birds. So, we decided to give the Grubblies a try. As an experiment, we put two cups of Grubblies in a feeder and two cups of dried meal worms in an identical feeder beside it. After about 2 days, the meal worms were completely gone while the Grubblies had barely been touched. We left the Grubblies in the feeder and about 4 days later, they, too, were mostly gone.
So, from this initial experiment, our wild birds choose meal worms over Grubblies. However, that does not mean the Grubblies are not better or that they will not get eaten by wild birds, just that they are not (yet) preferred to the dried meal worms.
Our plan now is to mix the Grubblies and meal worms together in the feeder. If this is successful (i.e. if the Grubblies aren’t left behind as the meal worms are consumed), then we may be able to conclude that it’s an acquired taste. Will report back later on this experiment.
For your information, our primary backyard meal worm eaters are eastern blue birds, northern mockingbirds, carolina wrens, and the odd northern cardinal. We hope the Grubblies will be a success not only because of the US source, but also for the extra calcium and nutrients they provide as we go into mating season.
The four star rating has nothing to do with my experiments and may be unfair. I’m taking off one star only for the cost difference compared to the meal worms. I have no problems with the Grubblies themselves and as they are not intended for wild birds primarily, I can’t fault them for not being preferred so far by our wild birds.

We have 6 chickens that we got for the supply of fresh eggs, but now they have become members of the family. The girls have not been laying much this winter, so I tried feeding meal worms for extra protein. Egg production didn’t budge, and I realized that the mealworms we got were shipped from China. Ugh. I have no idea what might be in those, and I am not confident that my chicken kids should be eating them, or that my actual kids should be eating the eggs we get as a result. I went looking for a better product, found Grubblies on Amazon and the girls love them! They come running when they see or hear the bag come out. The kids love feeding the girls their snack, its so fun to watch. The grubs have so much more protein and calcium than meal worms, they are made in the US, and I looked at the Grubbly Farms website and feel much safer with them than with what I was getting before. I’m happy, the chickens are super happy, and they definitely love the Grubblies. I’m going to get the big treat tank next.

I have Japanese Quail. They go crazy over their Grubbies. I started giving them Grubbies (daily) when the Autumn molt was in full swing and egg production had nearly halted. I saw a clear difference within a week in their appearance, activity levels and an improvement in egg production. They went from nearly zero eggs daily to our normal daily egg from each hen within 2 weeks. As for a difference in egg taste, my hubby said he hasn’t noticed any from the quail eating Grubbies.
My quail are protected from the weather in an unheated building. I am giving them Grubbies every few days now as cooler weather has arrived here (October) in Ohio and Winter soon to follow. I want them to go into Winter as healthy and pumped up as possible. The entire covey hurries over when I put Grubbies in the enclosures. I like their improved health (and attitude) and they love Grubbies.
I like feeding Grubbies because:
1. It’s a USA product beginning to end.
2. The nutrient levels match what the quail need.
3. I’ve seen the difference Grubbies made in my quail AND the quail really like them.
4. NO WASTE!

My chickens go crazy for them and my eggs taste great and the shells are nice and hard. I hardy have to by oyster shells if at all.
